Bayanihan for Development: Upscaling Remittances at the Local Level/ in LGUs (URL)
The project, with the support of LBC Express Inc., provides a strategic opportunity to fully engage LGUs, the migrants themselves and OF families in leveraging remittances for more productive uses, and in focusing on migration and development as part and parcel of the decision-making and policy-making processes of the LGUs and the operationalization of those processes.
The goal of the project is to institutionalize the migration and development agenda in the planning and decision-making process of the LGUs. It will likewise encourage migrants, their families and their communities to use remittances to contribute to local economic development. It capitalizes on the notion that the effective and sustainable institutionalization of remittance models is inherent in the “bayanihan” spirit of Filipinos where family culture and community values provide an avenue for cooperative engagement. It also reinforces the inclination of OFs to “return” to their “hometowns,” to “give back” to the province/city/town where they came from and where most likely their “extended families” still live. The project will generate partnerships between the OFs, their families and communities as well as the private and public sector to develop materials that would support socio-economic activities in their communities of origin.
