Jury orders L.A. recruiting firm to pay $4.5 million to teachers

The 350 teachers were lured from the Philippines for teaching jobs in Louisiana, but most had to pay Universal Placement International about $16,000 for the jobs.


A federal jury has ordered a Los Angeles recruiting firm and its owner to pay $4.5 million to 350 teachers who said they were lured from the Philippines for teaching jobs in Louisiana but ended up being exploited.

Overseas Filipino remittances hit record $1.93-B in Oct., Bangko Sentral reports

Money sent home by Filipinos living and working abroad hit a record $1.93 billion in October, helped by more choices with which to send money back to the Philippines.

In a statement Monday, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas said cash remittance inflow rose by 8.5 percent from $1.84 billion in October 2012 .

CFO supports the implementation of ILO Conventions on Domestic and Maritime Workers

The Commission on Filipinos Overseas (CFO) expresses its support in the implementation of the International Labour Organization Convention Concerning Decent Work for Domestic Workers (ILO Convention 189) and the Maritime Labour Convention as both enter into force in 2013.
